Cook and Quinn on Same Page after Pocono Test
Terry Cook spent two days testing the No. 60 Wyler.com Toyota during an open test at Pennsylvania ’s Pocono Raceway on Tuesday and Wednesday. Although the track is not a part of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule, Cook and his team had a laundry list of items to accomplish in the agenda and first and foremost was working on communication between Cook and new crew chief John Quinn.
Quinn started the season as the team’s engineer and shock specialist but moved to the crew chief role after George Church departed following the fourth race of the season at Martinsville .
Cook said it will be a smooth transition if the first two days of working together are any indication.
“I guess the easiest way to put it is like this: it’s like two people working on a project together. One has a Windows computer and the other has a Mac. They might be trying to do the same thing but the process is different because they are using a different system and the language isn’t quite the same. Let’s just say John and I are both working on a Windows computer. We’re on the same page and speaking the same language.”
The transition was made easier because the duo did have four races of experience together.
“Having those four races helped John know how I communicate,” Cook said. “He had a chance to listen to how I talk and we’ve worked together. It’s not like we just hopped into this cold and that’s a big benefit. I think George did a good job getting us to where we are now, and John will pick up the ball and run with it.”
While chemistry was the priority, the team did have a chance to shake down two trucks over the course of the test.
“We had a chance to test the truck we’ve been carrying around all season long as a backup,” Cook said. “We had a feeling it was going to be a pretty good piece and the test just confirmed that. We also tested one of the trucks we had down at Atlanta for the test there. After we ran it down in Atlanta we weren’t too happy with it so we brought it back and had a new front clip put on it and the guys on the team put in a lot of hard work to get it rebuilt. We were pretty happy with the way that truck ran too. It was a very productive test.”
Although the unique Pocono layout is unlike any other in all of NASCAR, the Wyler Racing team was able to take away some information that will help at several Truck Series venues throughout the season.
“You might not think Pocono would be a good track to go test, but we actually learned a lot,” Cook said. “We worked on setups to get through turn three, which is a long, flat, sweeping corner. That will help us at Milwaukee and Gateway later and even turns three and four at Phoenix . We learned a lot about how these two trucks take adjustments.”
Next up for Cook and the No. 60 Wyler.com Toyota is the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway. The 167-lap/250-mile race is scheduled for April 26, with live coverage on SPEED starting at 5:30 P.M. Eastern. MRN Radio will have the live radio call on select affiliates nationwide and NASCAR Radio Channel 128 on Sirius Satellite Radio.
