Terry Cook on qualifying at Darlington Raceway . . .

“You have to be aggressive.  Qualifying is all about giving it all she’s got for those two laps.  You have to have faith in your truck and your team in that they put a setup underneath that can stand that kind of speed.  Qualifying at Darlington in the trucks is a place you can flat out hold the throttle down through turns one and two and you lift a little in turns three and four.  The track has a lot of grip with fresh tires but you have one, maybe two laps to propel yourself through the corners like that so you need to get all you can get.  Fortunately, I’ve been able to do that in the past there in qualifying.  In the race, you just work on a good balance all day long, now all night long.  You know the lap times are going to fall off in excess of a full second so you need to prepare for this.  Having a good-balanced truck is going to be key at Darlington.”

Terry Cook on comparing Darlington Raceway . . .

“I don’t think you can compare Darlington to any other racetrack we compete on.  From an aerial view, it may look like Gateway (International Raceway) and some others tracks but it sure doesn’t drive anything like Darlington.  There’s enough banking in the corners that you can really get after it.  Gateway is a flat track so there’s not a lot of comparison between the two.  What can you say about Darlington; it’s ‘Too Tough To Tame.’  You have to respect the racetrack all night long.  Not only do you have to race the competition, you have to race the track.  You have to do everything you can to stay out of trouble. The minute you get overconfident or get a little too ‘racey,’ you’ll end up getting in the fence.”

Terry Cook on Darlington being a night event versus a day event . . .

“I don’t expect really anything much different with the race being at night than we do during the day.  The trucks or any vehicle look faster at night.  The race is more exciting for the fans.  It will be a bit cooler with it being late fall in the southeast and racing at night so temperatures may be at the 50-degree range.  Nighttime racing may help the tires run longer and it will help the engine run cooler.  I’m sure the race fans will enjoy night racing with the trucks at Darlington.”
