Terry Cook on a possible victory at Martinsville Speedway . . .
I certainly think we can win this weekend at Martinsville. If you dont think you can win, you might as well not show up because all of us in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series go to the track thinking were going to end up in Victory Lane. We truly believe the International Trucks and Engines race team can capture our first victory of the season right there at Martinsville. The key ingredients in the race are great pit stops, a truck thats good on long runs and a good qualifying effort the day before. If we can add all those ingredients together, we definitely can put ourselves in contention for a victory.
Terry Cook on returning to Martinsville Speedway . . .
Were excited to have the chance to redeem ourselves. The setup underneath the International Trucks and Engines Ford is something weve never run at Martinsville Speedway before. Well have to wait and see once we get some practice laps and a good qualifying run in but youll see bunch of teams go to Martinsville this weekend with a completely different setup from what theyve had there in years past.
Terry Cook on what it will take to win on Martinsville Speedways new surface . . .
Track position, qualifying and getting the right setup under the International Trucks and Engines Ford will be very, very important at Martinsville Speedway this weekend. Its going to take an extremely good setup. We dont talk a lot about horsepower at Martinsville Speedway although you have to have a good engine. Horsepower is not the key ingredient, rather, its one hundred percent mechanical grip and chassis handling. The guy that can do those two the best will be the guy in Victory Lane. Were going there with a freshly-paved racetrack and everyone Ive talked to has said the track is extremely fast with a little bit different configuration. Theyve got the concrete further in the straightaways so the transition into and off of the concrete is actually more in the straightaways rather than in the corners. I look for the track to be one-groove for most of the day unlike what weve seen in the past. I definitely think it will create better racing in the future. Im an optimist and I feel like it will but one side of me says that it wont because you have such a newly-paved track. They grooved the bottom of the track to get rid of some of the bumps and they created a second groove, making both the inside and outside lanes compatible. The problem that all of us drivers had was we struggled after they grounded the track at the exit of both corners. We lost a lot of traction and grip we once had. Knowing theyve moved the concrete further down the racetrack so you can smoothly transition off and actually be in the straightaway before you hit the asphalt, I think is good for us competitors . For the race fans, however, it may take a race or two before they see side-by-side racing but who knows. Maybe well see side-by-side racing at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday.
