Terry Cook on racing at Bristol Motor Speedway . . .
I like going to Bristol Motor Speedway because its so much different than the norm. Last year was the first year back since 1999 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. It was something we all missed on the schedule. We were glad to see it come back on the schedule. Bristol is a race everyone looks forward to because it is different. Its kind of like Darlington Raceway; its anything different than the norm.
Terry Cook on predicting an outcome at Bristol. . .
You really cant. Track position is huge at Bristol. Its very tough to pass at Bristol but you can do it if you have a really good truck. You have to have good pit stops all night but you also have to qualify well. Even if you put yourself in a position where you qualify well like we did last year in fourth, it doesnt assure youll finish well. Its a track where you can sit on the pole and be in lapped traffic and then suddenly be caught up in a wreck. Theres a lot of luck that plays into itself and I usually dont talk about luck because I believe you make your own as a race team. There is racing luck, the kind that gets you caught up in other peoples wrecks. Its what I call bad luck.
Terry Cook on pooling data from other short track races in 2004 . . .
We can pull some of what we did at the other short tracks but there is nothing we race on that is similar to Bristol. Bristol is such a unique track by itself. Whether its Mansfield, Memphis, IRP or Martinsville, absolutely zero will help us at Bristol. There is nothing weve done at the other short tracks this year that can help us at Bristol. Its a 36-degree banked track. Youre going to see shock travels three times what you normally see at most tracks. It takes a completely different setup to get around Bristol competitively.
Terry Cook on last years performance . . .
We had a good qualifying effort in the Ford Power Stroke Diesel by International race truck but it was one of those races we really didnt have a good race setup underneath the truck. We got taken out early in the race by a spin and worked our way back to the front, trying to be patient and not doing anything silly. Bristol is a racetrack where you can get caught up in somebody elses mess very quickly and unfortunately thats what happened to us. We were trying to lap a guy that was on his way to the back and he got sideways and took us out at the same time. It was just very short night for us at Bristol.
