DARLINGTON, SC (March 14, 2003) - Terry Cook turned a good day into a better one driving his No. 29 Power Stroke Diesel Ford to a solid eighth-place finish in the Craftsman 200 at Darlington Raceway Friday. Earlier in the day, Cook and his K-Automotive team announced Oil Mate, an advanced oil management system for diesel engines, had joined the Power Stroke Diesel truck as a major associate sponsor for the remainder of the 2003 NCTS season.
"We had a big day announcing Power Stroke Diesel and K-Automotive's new alignment with EMP's Oil Mate brand, " said Cook. "We also grabbed our second Top-10 of the season and moved up a couple of spots to sixth in the points. We had a good truck, but it was on the edge of out of control because it was so loose at the end of a run. Fortunately, our Power Stroke Diesel/Oil Mate Ford pit crew helped save us today with our pit stops."
Cook bounced in and out of the Top-10 for the duration of the 147-Lap event after starting eighth when rain postponed qualifying and the field was set on the final NCTS 2002 owner's point standings. Darlington's reputation as the "Track Too Tough To Tame" proved to be true for Cook as he wrestled his ill-handling Power Stroke Diesel/Oil Mate machine to the finish.
"The truck would get so loose at the end of a run that I couldn't touch the throttle," said Cook, who earned $9,975 for the Darlington finish and moved within 60 markers of first place in the championship standings. "It was out of control. We struggled with it, tuned on it, and got it better all race long. The best that we probably were was on a green-flag stop and made some adjustments that really helped it. When the final caution came out, the only set of tires that we had left were four scuffs. They had a few laps on them as opposed to stickers and when it went back to green, we just didn't have the right tire compound. We will take the eighth-place finish and move on to Bakersfield. It's good to have Bakersfield back for our program after a year's absence."
Cook and the No. 29 Power Stroke Diesel/Oil Mate Ford team will take the green flag in Lucas Oil 250 at Mesa Marin Raceway Friday, March at 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The event will be telecast live on Speed Channel and broadcast live on MRN Radio nationwide.
